If you’ve been considering plastic surgery, you should already know that despite the often impressive results, complications with the surgery are a very real possibility. This is also true for breast augmentation, despite it on the surface resembling a relatively fuss-free procedure. If you’re wanting to undergo a breast augmentation procedure, regardless of its extremity it is important to be fully versed in all of the potential risks that are involved. In this article, we demonstrate what these complications are to help you better understand what might result from such a procedure if you decide to pursue it.

The complications that can arise as a result of breast implants

If you’re looking at getting a breast augmentation in Sydney, it’s important to know that while this kind of surgery isn’t too problematic if you go with a highly qualified and experienced surgeon, there’s still certainly potential for issues to arise regardless of who is operating on you. It is for this reason that patients will be requested to sign consent forms, as this acts as a guarantee that you have fully understood what the procedure entails and any and all of the potential risks and complications. Issues that can arise with a breast revision procedure can potentially include things like varying degrees of bleeding, hematoma, an infection, a variance in the sensation of nipples or breasts, wrong or faulty positioning of the breast implant, the wrinkling of skin over the implant, the development of tight scar tissue around the implant (referred to as capsular contracture), the potential for an implant to leak or rupture, some degree of fluid accumulation, in addition to the development of persistent pain. There are also risks that can develop as a result of anaesthesia, which is the case for any surgery.

Breast implants and safety

Although the laundry list of complications can be scary, these are far from a guarantee, and will most likely not happen to the standard patient. In the event that there is a complication that develops, then the possibility of revision surgery will certainly be raised in order to manage the issues that arose in the initial surgery. It should also be noted that breast implants are not necessarily and once and done procedure – the implants are not guaranteed to the last the lifetime of the patient, and there is always a chance that either one or both implants will need to be replaced at some stage in the future. It’s also important to note that they won’t necessarily have the same appearance over your lifetime, as lifestyle will cause implants to change in certain ways. For example, pregnancy and weight loss can have significant impacts on how implants can look.

Breast augmentation should be taken seriously

Although it may be a frivolous decision for some, it should be clear that opting for breast augmentation can require some serious consideration. It is also important to keep in mind that the nature of the procedure requires patients to come in for regular checks in order to assess the health of the breasts specifically, in addition to the patient as a whole. At the end of the day, although complications may not necessarily happen to you, it’s important to prepare for the worst so that you can manage any complications quickly and with as little hassle as possible.
