Moving to a different city means taking on numerous tasks that range from easy to extremely difficult. You will have to pack your things, choose your removalist, ensure your new home is ready for habitation, prepare your kids for the move, etc.

Because you simply have so many things to do in preparation for your move, you will be more likely to make mistakes that can lead to other problems and headaches. These mistakes can also cause you to spend more money than you have to for your relocation.

Leading interstate movers share below the worst mistakes you have to avoid during a big move:

  1. Not allocating enough time for packing

The most difficult and time-consuming aspect of moving is packing. Putting all your clothes, small appliances, kitchenware, fixtures, and other items from the different rooms in your home in cartons will take you several hours. Packing your large appliances and furnishings will take more time and hard work as well.

If you start packing all your belongings two or three days before your move, you will be inclined to do this haphazardly since you won’t have enough time to do this properly. You will then end up having a lot of damaged items even before you get to your new home simply because you rushed through the packing process.

Once you get the final schedule for your move, ideally start packing the things you don’t use often four to six weeks before the actual moving date. Pack per room as well to ensure you won’t forget anything important. Following this technique will also allow you to stay organised and help you have an easier time unpacking after the move.

Packing by the room offers the additional benefits of sorting your items faster. You will easily know which ones you still use or need from each room.

  1. Packing everything

A change of address means feeling homesick and finding ways to overcome this possibly debilitating emotion. To fight off this emotion, you may think that bringing all your things with you, even the really old, unusable, and broken items will be a good idea.

Although these items may remind you of your loved ones and the home you are leaving behind, you will spend more time and effort packing them, especially old, fragile or broken items. In addition, you will need to buy more packing supplies. You will end up paying more for removal services too, since there will be more cartons and items to load, transport, and deliver to your new home.

If it is something that you don’t use, you may want to rethink keeping it. If there are other smaller or more useful mementos you can take with you, keep those. Let go of bulky old knick-knacks which have no real use.

Ultimately, however, choosing to hold on to old, useless things because of their emotional value is up to you. However, if you sort your things early on, it means you have time to make more rational decisions. Sell, donate, give, or throw away things you won’t be taking with you so you will have fewer items to pack.

  1. Ignoring the signs that you need help

Putting off packing and having a lot of items of different sizes and types to pack even if you have decluttered, are two obvious signs that you need help with preparing for the move.

When you pack quickly and carelessly, you are putting all your items at a higher risk of getting damaged during the move. Additionally, if you have lots of furniture pieces and appliances that need to be disassembled, you will benefit from getting help from removalists that also offer packing services.

  1. Failing to research your removalist

Whether you’re still looking for a removalist or have already chosen one, failing to look them up online before signing an agreement with them may cause you a lot of problems in the long run.

When you neglect to research your removalist, you may jeopardize your move. This is because you will be blindly entrusting your valuable possessions to a group of people you know nothing about.

To be certain all your items reach your new home intact and in their original condition, make sure the removalist you will hire has a good reputation and track record. Read online reviews about the company and visit their website to check their pricing, mission statements, years of service, professional accreditations/affiliations, etc.

You won’t need to spend several hours to do this but you will make your move stress-free when you do this simple task.

  1. Forgetting to schedule your moving date with your removalist

Lastly, although this is a mistake that seems too trivial to make, don’t be surprised; a lot of people about to move only contact their removalist a day or two before their scheduled moving date.

If you leave scheduling your move to the last minute, your removalist may not be able to accommodate your request. This is especially true during the summer when more people tend to move houses and business premises.

It is, therefore, important that you book the services of your chosen removalist a month or two before the actual moving day to avoid scrambling for a new one and ending up with another company that may have a dubious reputation.

By being aware of these common moving mistakes you can make and knowing how to avoid them, you will ensure your move will go as planned.
